5 Tips for Growing Carrots in Raised Beds

Loose soil is key

1. Properly prepare the raised bed where you are going to plant your carrots by making sure that you have at least 30 cm or 12 inches of fine loose soil.

Make sure you break up any lumps and remove any rocks that may be in the bed because they could stunt the growth of the carrot by not allowing it to grow straight down.  Clumps and rocks are the primary reason for funky carrot shapes.

Soil composition

2. The type of soil or growing medium is very important for carrots.

Proper soil preparation is extremely important for growing carrots! If the carrot roots can’t easily grow freely, it can lead to stunted and those famously shaped carrots.

The best types are some soil, well-rotted animal manure, old rotted straw, compost, or any other rotted organic material you may have.

The more humus you have in your raised bed the better as this helps the soil to retain moisture.

This is important because raised beds have very good drainage and you don’t want your bed to dry out, as carrots grow sweeter and less fibrous in moist soil.

Mulch to reduce weeds

3. It is a good idea to mulch around your vegetables with organic material, which will help stop the weeds from growing as well as retain the moisture for the plants.

The key to mulching around carrots is to wait until after they germinate to put a thick layer of mulch down.  Mulching before the carrots germinate can cause poor germination.

Correct Spacing

4. It is incredibly important to have the proper spacing between carrots.  If they are too close together, the carrots will not get to full size.

If the carrots have too much space in them, you will not be able to get a good harvest.  Carrots can be sown and then thinned every 3-4 inches apart depending on the type of carrot.

You can always use the baby carrots that you thinned out to make roasted carrots like this.

Feed them

5. Young plants really benefit from foliar feeding with natural organic sprays. This helps to keep them healthy.

You can use store-bought products or make your own, e.g. compost tea or diluted worm tea. If you can avoid using chemicals it is better for you and the garden.

In Conclusion

By using these 5 tips in your raised bed vegetable garden, you will be able to successfully grow a bumper crop of sweet carrots, for you and your family to enjoy.
