Over the last few years – there has been massive amounts of food recalls on anything from salad mix, milk, cilantro – an now eggs, really?  The latest food recall is eggs.  What can we buy at the local market – safely? Don’t count your eggs – just yet!

In a story breaking yesterday – we learn that eggs are now being recalled because a possible salmonella contamination.  An article published on The Daily Meal and MSN said that “more than 200 million eggs produced by Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Indiana have been recalled this weekend over fears of salmonella.

According to a statement from the FDA, Rose Acre issued the recall after officials traced multiple illnesses back to eggs produced at the company’s facility in North Carolina. Some 22 people have reportedly been sickened with salmonella; no deaths have been reported.

Affected eggs were sold under multiple brand names, including Country Daybreak, Coburn Farms, Crystal Farms, Sunshine Farms, and Glenview. Eggs affected by the recall were sold to grocery stores and restaurants in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Some the eggs were sold to Walmart and in Food Lion grocery stores, and some also reportedly went to Waffle House. Click here to see a full list of eggs affected by the recall.”

Is anyone else tired of all of these food recalls?  I know – I am!  Things like this are the main reason that we started growing our own food.  It was the hormone injected milk scare more than a decade ago that tipped us over the line.  We decided right then, that we would start growing as much of our own food as possible on whatever property we had.  You can do the same too!

Just dive in!  Start with a raised bed and grow some delicious vegetables for your family.  Raised beds can be cheap and easy to make.

Want to eat eggs without being scared of another recall – get some chickens or ducks for your backyard.  They are easy to keep and will provide you with fresh eggs that you and your family will enjoy!  If you can’t produce them yourself, you can start today by supporting local farmers and artisan vendors who produce things like grass-fed meats, organic vegetables and honey.
