10 food storage items that almost never go bad

How is your food storage going?  Do you have a stockpile?  There are a lot of different options of things to fill your stockpile with.  Rice, beans, canned meats – what else could you want?  When you start collecting items for your food storage – you always have to remember the expiration dates and remember to rotate your stock.  This will keep things fresh in your storage.  There are some things that don’t go bad as quickly as others.  Here is 10 food storage items that almost never go bad.

Shelf Life

When adding to your food storage, it is always important to remember the shelf life of your items.  Keeping this in mind will help you to never let anything go bad in your stockpile.

When actually bringing more items in after a shopping trip, make sure to use FIFO.  FIFO stands for “first in first out”.  It is a simple method of rotation.  If you rotate your food storage as you get in new items – you will use the oldest first.

10 Food storage items that almost never go bad

1.Dry beans

Dry beans are a great food item to store in your stockpile.  They are a versatile item that you can season in a number of different ways that also provide a great source of protein.  Making sure to get enough protein in your diet is key to remaining healthy enough to survive the situation you may be in.

2.Bouillon Cubes

Bouillon cubes come in a variety of different flavors from chicken, beef and even vegetable.  Vegetable, really? Yes!  These bouillon cubes are a great way to add a much needed punch of flavor to any soup or stew.  They are a great addition to your storage.

Flour comes in a number of different types.  You have all purpose, bleached, unbleached, self-rising and even bread specific flours.  Flour is used in a ton of ways in cooking and can be very beneficial to have in your food storage.  With just some flour, water and some seasonings you can make what my mother called “drop biscuits”.  They may not be pretty but they are filling.

What does food taste like without a little salt?  I mean food is great and all but a little pinch of salt can make a world of difference in a dish.  In addition to using salt in cooking, you can also use it to cure meats and even use it in the process of tanning hides.

Sugar is another thing that is absolutely vital to food storage.  How does one make sweet tea without sugar? What self-respecting southerner doesn’t drink sweet tea?  Sugar can last a long time as long as you keep it dry.

There are a lot of items that you can add to your stockpile that serve multiple purposes.  Liquor is one of those items as it can be used for drinking, sterilizing and even bartering.  Liquor is going to be a precious commodity in a SHTF situation.

7.Dry milk

Dry milk is another item that can be used in a variety of ways.  It is pretty affordable and easier to store in comparison to its liquid form which makes this an item you must have.  Also, what is a bowl of fruit loops without milk?  Just because the world could be falling apart – that doesn’t mean we are uncivilized, right?

Rice is something that can be very cheap to buy in bulk and easy to store.  The only challenge with storing rice for the long term is it needs to be kept dry.  If you can keep it dry – you can enjoy rice for years to come.

Vinegar is yet another versatile item to have in your food storage.  It can be used to pickle vegetables from your garden to preserve them and used to clean the house.  Vinegar can clean hardwood floors and even windows with very little effort.

Honey is an item that you can buy locally in most cases directly from the beekeeper and can be kept in food storage for a rather long time.  If you buy it locally – honey can be used to treat allergies and is great for a sore throat with a little lemon.

The ten items on this list are great items to have in your food storage or stockpile.  They are easy to store and can last for a rather long time.  As long as you keep most of these items dry – you should be fine. This list does not contain all of the food items that can last.
